The Situation: 
Brazil is a large and diverse country with a history that is deeply influenced by various European nations. There is a complete range of landscape and climate including rain forest, arid regions, coastal sections, grasslands and rolling hills. Brazil’s economy is the largest in South America but does not support its people equally. The extremes of great wealth and severe poverty are seen when traveling along the river and in the major cities. Brazil has the largest Catholic population in the world but the evangelical church is growing rapidly. Spiritualist religions are also commonplace in Brazil and cause challenges for the growth of the church. There are still areas where the Gospel has not penetrated, such as some urban areas, isolated cities, and remote areas of the Amazon River basin. The Ministry:
Amazon Project is the church planting, riverboat ministry of the Presbyterian Church of Manaus, a church of 6,000 members located in the Amazon region of Brazil. Through ongoing outreach to small river villages utilizing medical, children’s ministry, sports ministry, and other forms of evangelism, many churches have been planted. Pastor Djard Cadais deMoraes is one of the staff pastors who oversees the river ministry. The goal is to plant 200 churches by 2010. The Presbyterian Church of Manaus is also very active in outreach within the city of Manaus and has many well-developed and effective ministries.

The Results:
Thousands of people have come to Christ through the ministry of the Presbyterian Church of Manuas and their river ministry, Amazon Project. As of 2008, 25 churches have been planted within Manaus and another 75 along the Amazon and its tributaries. Also, there are as many as 2,500 children and youth involved in their soccer outreach and many others involved in other aspects of their ministry. Leaders from the main church are sought after to train churches across Brazil, and are respected for their integrity and character.
