National Adoption Day

November 18, 2020

At Christ Community Church, we want to be a body that creates a culture enabling and supporting its members to help vulnerable children that are in the foster care system and are waiting to be adopted. November 21st is National Adoption Day. This is a time to recognize all of the families that have made it their goal to love on children by bringing them into their homes. This is also a time to tell people about opportunities with adoption.

The DCFS website states that, “Last fiscal year 1,523 Illinois children were adopted into permanent, loving families. Today there are around 18,000 youth in care waiting for a family and place to call home.”

Adoption is not for the faint of heart! It can be a long, emotional and draining process. Many foster kids have been through more in their young lives than most adults. Some have been bounced around to different homes. Some of these homes are warm and welcoming, but others are poorly funded, neglectful, and unstable. Some have been separated from their siblings.

During the pandemic, DCFS calls have dropped dramatically because people who interact with children daily such as school nurses, teachers, school social workers, community members and neighbors aren’t seeing the children on a regular basis. Some are not in-person at school while remote learning and have become isolated. It is our duty to look after these children and be their eyes and ears.

So we are thankful to those who have created safe homes for vulnerable children. We are thankful for those who may not have the capacity to take children into their home, but offer support through resources and other help. Visit Christ Community’s website to see the efforts in which we are working towards creating a safe space for all children. We will continue to be sharing ways we can come alongside families and individuals who can offer support to kids in need.
