Hands & Feet: Serving The Vulnerable

Hands & Feet: Orphan Sunday

James 1:27 – “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

How can James write this? How is caring for orphans and widows – pure and faultless religion? What about the Gospel? “Being unpolluted by the world” makes sense but where is worship and prayer and evangelism and such in this? When I claim to be a Christian, am I really declaring my allegiance to the fatherless and the widow as well? As I reflected on this passage, God spoke. He said, “the answer is yes.”

The question I want to answer today is this, “What does being a Christian have to do with orphans?”

To answer this question I’d like to invite you to turn with me to the book of Romans, chapter 8, verses 12-17 to see how the Apostle Paul would answer this question.
