Safe Families for Children – Supporting Families in Crisis

November 24, 2020

There are so many families, especially right now, that are unable to provide a safe and nurturing home for their children. Some parents and guardians struggle to provide financially, do not have time or resources for their children, or are susceptible to abuse or neglect.

Types of situations that would be cause for crises include, but are not limited to, homelessness, unemployment, hospitalization of a child’s guardian, domestic violence, incarceration, and substance abuse. That’s when Safe Families for Children steps in! When families are in crisis, this organization keeps kids safe by providing them with hosts that create a compassionate community for these kids. The hope is always to bring healing and restoration to these families so that the children can return home.

Christ Community Church has been partnering with Safe Families and often hears stories of how it is changing lives. In January there was a single mom of five living in Chicago who needed help with her kids for a month while she job searched and secured an apartment for them. Two of the siblings were placed in a home in Geneva and were able to get together often to see each other. The bond between the sisters was precious and the mom had a special connection with each child in a different way. When COVID and the shut downs happened, it was stressful and she struggled again. But the children’s mom recently moved into an apartment and is working on getting her GED so she can get a better job. The mom and her kids have been able to stay connected to some of the host families and continue their relationship! This mom was able to build a supportive community thanks to Safe Families.

This is one example of so many! Christ Community Church longs to be a body of believers that welcomes children into their homes. Through support with the adoption process and partnering with both Safe Families and The Forgotten Initiative, Christ Community will always look for ways to offer all children safe homes.
